Pastor's Perspective

Father’s Day – a message from Jo

Today is an occasion to honour and remember fathers and those who have acted as fathers in our lives. For some of us our fathers have since passed away. Let today be an occasion to remember them, to utter their name in prayer and to sit quietly and reflect on what we may have learned from them.
Our fathers have passed on skills, traits, wisdoms and all manner of things we carry with us each day, things that we can pass on to the next generation. There are some among us who are now grandparents and we watch proudly as our children become parents. Today let’s purposefully consider our role as grandparents and particularly as grandfathers. Let us also give thanks for fathers, especially the fathers of our grandchildren and promise ourselves to be even more supportive of them.
Parenting in never simple and sometimes it goes horribly wrong. Today you might like to take a moment to reflect and pray about those hurts you carry or even the hurts you have caused. Let God the Father take your hurts, carry them and lighten your burden.
Almighty God and heavenly Father, your Son Jesus shared in family life and an earthly home with Joseph and Mary. Bless our homes; we pray that parents and children may be bound to each other by mutual love and honour, and come to a full knowledge of your love for them. Heal the broken-hearted and bind up the wounded, comfort and sustain those in need. Give to them wise and faithful friends and the grace to forgive and be forgiven. AMEN

West Window roller shutters: Would you like to contribute to this project? We have raised $ 427.85 our goal is $1,920.00. These roller shutters are important in our ministry to the community because they will darken the worship space so that everyone is able to see what is on the screen with greater clarity. This is particularly needed when we have afternoon events such as funerals when a photo eulogy or other power point presentation is used.

Pastor's Perspective with Rev Jo White

ANZAC Myth

This week the world marked the start of World War I - the war to end all wars the catch phrase of 1914. Of course it was not the war to end war, there was another war even more horrifying than WWI and then came Korea, Vietnam, The Falklands, Afghanistan and even today armed conflict continues in Gaza and Ukraine and Afghanistan. There have been too many wars.

We hope that the United Nations,
formed in the wake of WWII to prevent another such conflict, can and will be able to exercise real power in international affairs. The objectives of the UN include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.

As Christians we do not advocate war. We are people of peace. We are taught by Jesus to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us. (Luke 6:27)

Much is being made of the 100th anniversary of WWI and quite rightly we are remembering this war because there are lessons to learn from the past and there are people and stories worthy of honour and remembrance. Let us be careful that as we honour and remember that we do not glorify war; that we don’t create a myth that stirs up nationalist fervor and convince ourselves that we have the right to impose ourselves on others because we are somehow stronger or better.

The ANZAC legend is one that encompasses values that are wider than that of our own nation, they are human qualities valued by people everywhere; such things as courage, sacrifice and commitment to each other particularly in extreme hardship.
