SEPTEMBER THE MONTH OF HOSPITALITY

St Paul reminds us that we are not to conform to this world but seek to discern the will of God. Often when we receive an invitation to the home of others we ask; ‘What can I bring?’ Or we might decide that such an invitation demands an invitation to our house next time. That is the way our society works. We are in a constant state of repaying people for their hospitability. As Christians we can demonstrate our desire to live disciples by not expecting such repayment. We give because we are confident that God will provide. We give because we have already received more than we can ever repay to God. Generosity is right up there with hospitality. In a parable Jesus’ reminds us that; ‘Just as we did it to the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:40)

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2)

PRAY AS YOU GO

Grace before mealsKen and I have recently returned from annual leave. While in Melbourne we often ate in restaurants or at the home of friends. It is our habit to say grace before meals no matter where that is. When we are in the home of friends we naturally respect their wishes but if we are dining in a restaurant or at home we give thanks for God’s blessings and for the food we are about to enjoy. Sometimes, when we do so in restaurants we feel a little bit embarrassed but we go ahead anyway even if it is in a low voice that only those at the table can hear. May I encourage you, in this month of prayer, to say grace at meal times even when in public. If it has not been your habit to say grace I offer the following to help get you started.

Suggested graces:
Bless those that sit at this table, the food that is on it, and those who prepared it. Amen.

May God bless this food to our use and ourselves in God’s service. Amen.

PEW SHEET 1st January 2017

EPIPHANY – Christmas begins on Christmas Day 25th December and the feast continues for twelve days until Epiphany on 6th January. Because Epiphany falls on a Friday in 2017 the church has moved its celebration to Sunday 1st January; it’s not until Epiphany that our nativity scene is joined by the figures of the wise men. The Gospel of Matthew’s account of the visit of The Magi speaks simply of ‘wise men from the east’; later the number has become fixed at three probably because of the three gifts; gold, frankincense and myrrh. These wise men have also been named – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.

In Western churches, the Epiphany (manifestation) became an occasion to celebrate the visit of the wise men that travelled from the East, following a star to visit Jesus. The importance of their visit is that the Messiah was manifest to the Gentiles. The longed for saviour is not a saviour for the people of Israel alone but for the entire world.

Advent Wreath at Holy Trinity
ADVENT begins this Sunday Advent is a season of expectation and preparation, as the Church prepares to celebrate the coming of Christ in his incarnation, and also looks ahead to his final advent as judge at the end of time.
Recently heard in the shops were these comments as two women were buying a few Christmas Decorations; ‘Each year I am finding it harder and harder to get that Christmassy feeling.’ ‘These decorations are so cute.’ said her friend as she chose a glass decoration with a sparkly little church inside. This Advent we would like to help you to prepare for Christmas; to invite you to share Advent with us; to join us for The Nine Lessons and Carols or The Community Christmas Carols or Christingle, Midnight Mass or Christmas Day. The Church is the place to get that Christmassy feeling. Each week during Advent we will be lighting another candle on the Advent Wreath, a kind of count-down to Christmas. Do come and share all the joy of anticipation with us.

The church, Holy Trinity Yarram, always looks fabulous for this event with candles and festive lights. The evening will conclude with sparkling refreshments.
