Hospitality seems to have become an industry. It is possible to take a course in hospitality at TAFE. A short course includes things like basic cooking, customer service, food and beverage skills and even grooming and hygiene.

As Christians we don’t need to take a course to be hospitable. All we need are warm and generous hearts and maybe a bit of courage. When I have visited monasteries and convents I am always struck by the unquestioning gentle hospitality of the monks and nuns. Everything is laid out so carefully for their guests; wood for the fire, breakfast in the fridge, fresh sheets on the beds. It is not ostentatious but the welcome is gracious and loving. This happens because they regard every guest as if they were Christ himself.

At St Mark’s Abbey in Camperdown (a Benedictine Order) guests have an important role in the life of the monastery bringing with them the society from which they come, guests provide a window into the world that surrounds the monks and nuns there and for which they pray. Though guests of the abbey are received as Christ yet they are not seen as something rarefied but as the real, incarnate Christ who shares the life of all humanity. The image of St Benedict I have chosen shows him carrying the pilgrim’s staff. Those who take to the road for Christ need to find places of hospitality along the way. Welcoming the stranger is fundamental to the teachings of St Benedict and to Christ himself.

Hospitality does not need to be fancy. It does not need to be ostentatious. Good hospitality needs only to be genuine, gracious and loving.

THE BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

2.00pm Sunday 2^nd October at St John’s Port Albert;

Afternoon tea will be served in the church yard following the service.
We welcome all animals; great and small to our simple service of blessing in honour of St Francis of Assisi.
Cats and chooks in cages, dogs on leads and other small animals are invited to be blessed in the church. (Yes, snails and worms will be blessed.) Larger animals including pigs, cows, horses and working dogs will be blessed in the church yard or truck.

A Message about Peace from Rev. Jo

The Prime Minister of Great Britain Neville Chamberlain (1869 -1940) is remembered for the words ‘peace for our time’. He was speaking about one aspect of peace, namely the absence of war. But, peace has a richer and more profound meaning. The Book of Common Prayer includes in its pages the following words ‘Give peace in our time O Lord because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.’ As part of Evening Prayer these words form part of a prayer that acknowledges that it is God alone who grants peace, mercy, salvation, righteousness and beauty to the human heart. Peace is an important word for us as Christians, it is what our Lord has bequeathed to us; ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.’ (John 14:27) Peace is something we all seek. Peace for the world, for our nation, in our hearts, for those we love. God’s peace grows within us if we open our hearts and welcome God to dwell there in. Let us plant a tree of peace in our hearts, a tree that will grow and bear fruit; fruit we can share with our world, our nation, and our brothers and sisters of every race and nation.

We are planning a celebration on The Feast of Christ the King Sunday 20^th November with an afternoon service to which Bishop Kay will be our guest. In the meantime Diocesan Archivist will lead a tutorial to assist us with our preparations Wednesday 4 May 3.00pm at the Rectory. Please indicate your interest by speaking to Rev Jo.

This year’s theme Care For Our Common Home comes from Pope Francis’ circular on Ecology and Climate. The Anglican Communion Environmental Network of which the Australian Anglican Church is a representative has also written on this topic.

This year we are creating stronger links with our community and the Yarram Community Garden. The Harvest Festival will include a warm welcome to members of the community, a blessing of the fruits of the earth, produce swap table and a community barbecue in the hall and grounds.  

Would you like to help decorate the church, offer hospitality or organise the produce swap table? Please add your name to the list in the foyer. Decorating of the church will take place in the afternoon of Saturday 16^th

News from Parish Council – the gradual sale of pews at Holy Trinity is being discussed with a view to replacing with chairs. If you have any questions or comments to add to the discussion please talk to a parish councillor.

 

TARRA FESTIVAL – We again opened our hall for parade participants to meet, get ready, have a bit of breakfast or use the toilets. The Tarra Festival Committee really appreciates our community involvement and support. They are planning a ‘Thank You Barbeque Lunch’ for the Yarram Community at Holy Trinity Hall on Sunday 24^th April 12.00 noon – 2.00pm to which we are all invited.

 Anniversary of the death of Bishop John

6th June marks the anniversary of the passing of Bishop John. Sunday 7th June we will include prayers in memory of Bishop John at both Holy Trinity and St John's. Our retiring offering will support the John McIntyre Centre at the Abbey Raymond Island www.theabbey.org.au  and The Diocesan Aboriginal Ministry Fund.

The Anam Cara Community is a ministry of the Anglican Diocese of Gippsland offered by the Diocese to the whole church that offers a contemplative community of prayer and support by providing resources for individuals, parishes and other groups to support the inner journey into God. Each month the Anam Cara Community of Gippsland provide a Quiet Day. Next month this Quiet Day will take place in Yarram at the beautiful Greenmount Retreat House.

Strategic Plan – to be changed as we listen to God in prayer

Council has decided to offer Prayer Tutorials once a month following services at both Holy Trinity and St John’s during Ordinary Season.

New Vacuum Cleaner for Holy Trinity – we will purchase a new vacuum cleaner with the help of The Umbrella Club. Council thanks the members of the Umbrella Club for their generous gift to the church.

Blessing of the Fleet 2016 – to be held on Sunday 21^st February as part of the 175 anniversary celebrations of the founding of Port Albert

Anniversary of the death of Bishop John

It is the request of the 37^th Synod that we mark the anniversary of the passing of Bishop John McIntyre on Sunday 7^th June. Prayers will be offered and a retiring offering will be made for the John McIntyre Centre at the Abbey Raymond Island and The Diocesan Aboriginal Ministry Fund.

Rest eternal grant unto him O Lord,

and let light perpetual shine upon him.

NEPAL EARTHQUAKE EMERGENCY APPEAL -

Devastation in Nepal

Just before midday local time (approx. 4pm AEST) on Saturday 25th April, Nepal suffered one of the worst earthquakes to hit a populated area in living memory.  To put this in perspective, the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand in 2011 was a 6.2 magnitude. The Nepal earthquake has led to at least 2,500 people confirmed dead, the destruction of countless homes and buildings and has left many people sleeping on the streets in freezing temperatures. Anglican Board of Mission has earmarked $10,000 in order to provide emergency relief for those affected. ABM is working through ACT Alliance members a network of Churches

around the world providing Aid to the world's poorest, in order to provide emergency relief. ABM's Executive Director, the Rev John Deane, said, "This (Nepal) is one of world's poorest nations substantially due to its ruggedness and the task of rebuilding will be massive and take years." Please help ABM support the people of Nepal by donating and spreading the word. www.abmission.org/nepal-emergency  Please pray for the earthquake victims, and all who are helping in the relief effort.
